If you are reading this blog you are probably one of the visitors of Enigma Coffee and so you are a coffee drinker or a tea drinker, and you probably live in West Hollywood and like to get your “morning energy boost” - that’s a code word for coffee, close to your home.
Speaking of the energy boost, today we’d like to talk about Americano. It is definitely one of the most popular “go tos” among our regulars at our W Sunset Blvd location, we also like this simple yet versatile drink. There are so many ways to drink your Americano, you can have it hot, just black or perhaps with a splash of creamer or almond milk? Americanos are also great iced, pretty much zero calories but you are definitely powered up for the day. Some people think that they are getting less caffeine if they drink an Americano but its not entirely true, the espresso is diluted in water so you are indeed intaking that caffeine more gradually then in your espresso shot, but it's still the same amount of caffeine.
So how did Americano as a drink came to life? During the Second World War, when the American soldiers were liberating Italy from Fascism, they started visiting small Italian cafes and try the Italian food and drinks.
The most popular coffee drink at that time was espresso, during the war milk was hard to get so macchiatos, cappuccinos and lattes were not among the popular drink options. Espresso turned out to be too strong for the American soldiers, they started diluting it in water and later just asked baristas to do it for them. The Italians were not thrilled about this drink, image you come to a nice brewery where you can get a perfect pint of draft beer but it is too strong for you and you ask the barman to add water to it, its likely he wouldn’t be too excited about it, it was the same with old Italian baristas.
Over time, the taste got acquired and Americano earned its place in the Italian coffee menu and later all over the world.
If you like the kick of the espresso yet in its milder version, Americano is your drink and by the way, you can play with how much water you actually want in it, you can get as little or as much as you like. Come and try our best hot or iced Americanos, and if you feel particularly adventurous we’ll throw a little salted vanilla house made syrup in it for you.
